July 3

77 miles to Lander, Wyoming.  Tonight we have our one and only Warmshowers host for the trip so we are looking forward to that.  On our previous trips we utilized Warmshowers extensively and staying with and meeting new people has always been a highlight of any trip.

Today we started with a wonderful tailwind that allowed us to cover the first 30 miles in 1.5 hours.  We stopped at a small convenience store in Crowheart, part of the Shoshone Indian Reservation.  There we met a guy involved in a bike race across the United States.  He started in Portland, Oregon and will finish in Washington, DC.  He is currently riding a little over 200 miles a day and expects to complete the race in 18 days.  Pretty incredible.

Our next stop was at mile 60.  Another convenience store but this time on the Wind River Indian Reservation.  Several of the locals stopped and talked to us about our trip while we ate our snacks.

During the final 17 miles the wind had shifted and was now decidedly against us so that slowed us down a bit.  The landscape had also changed dramatically.  Before going over Togwotee pass the landscape was lush and green.  Now we were riding through high desert.  Very rocky and arid.  A lot of sage brush and hardly a tree to be found anywhere.

Our hosts for the evening were absolutely delightful.  We talked about our respective bike trips and many other things before making homemade pizza for dinner with salad and ice cream for dessert.  We didn't hit the sack until 11pm, completely exhausted.

The Painted Hills
Wonderful example of the layering of sediment over time.
Beautiful red rock formations.
A big change in the landscape.
Now in the high desert region.
Our hosts for the night - Mark and Judy.
