Mark and Judy made us a delicious breakfast of eggs, potatoes, and bacon for the morning before we hit the road. This is why Warm Showers and Couchsurfing are some of our favorite things to do during bike trips - you meet some of the kindest and most giving people. There are good people out there!
Leaving Lander around 8:30am, there were even more chairs set out on the sidewalk than yesterday when we rolled in. And people were already getting in position for July 4th festivities. They really celebrate here - everyone sets off their own fireworks from 10:00am - midnight, people line the streets, there's a parade... locals told us we absolutely had to stay to for it, but we had places to be.
Today's ride was not like yesterday's. The route averaged more uphill today, and once we hit our highest peak, the wind started fighting us. We went 60 miles today, and there was one safe haven - a rest stop at mile 40 with bathrooms, water fountains, and a place to sit in AC. Other than that, we passed nothing else all day, not even a tree to rest in the shade. Just miles of desert land, rolling hills, and mountains on the horizon.
This being our hottest day yet, we were happy to finally make it to Jeffrey City, which is not a city at all. All the buildings we rode past to get to the motel we're dilapidated and most were abandoned. The motel had a "For Sale" sign up, and half the rooms could not host guests. We were the only guests at the motel!! The diner in town didn't even have a sign out front - just a building with a light-up beer sign in the door. But we had shelter, beds, and food, so we were happy.
