July 1

Almost every day has a little trick up its sleeve.  Today the plan was to ride 66 miles to Dubois to enjoy our first rest day since we started.  The trick today was getting over Togwotee Pass which involved riding uphill for 17 miles at a 6% grade.  It took us over 3 hours to get to the top.  About 2 miles up the hill was a large flashing sign that read "Bears spotted by roadside - stay in your vehicle".  We found that pretty amusing considering we were going 4 miles per hour at times.  Any bear would have had an easy lunch if it spotted us!!!  We did not encounter any bears although we had our bear spray readily available.

About 3 miles from the top of the mountain we heard the first rumbles of thunder and the skies began to darken.  About 2 miles from the top it started to sprinkle.  And at 1 mile from the top we had to put on raingear because it was raining pretty good.  The top of the pass was at an elevation of 9658 feet.

On the way down the mountain it really started to pour.  I have to say it was quite exciting speeding down the mountain in a rainstorm!  But within 30 minutes the rain was behind us and the sun reappeared.  From there it was an easy ride into Dubois, Wyoming for our first day off.

One of our last views of the Tetons on the way up the Togwotee Pass.
